The Democratic Alliance (DA) yesterday achieved a stunning victory in the Ward 2 by-election held in the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality. The DA’s candidate, Ricardo Smith, obtained 1232 votes.
The DA increased its share of the vote in Ward 2 and obtained more votes than in the 2016 local government elections, up from 76,39% to 78,5%.
This result is a resounding vote of confidence in the DA. This endorsement from the voters proves that the DA remains on track to remove the ANC from power in the Dr Beyers Naude Municipality.
The ANC could only muster 21,4% of the vote.
Voters in rural Eastern Cape have shown that they are fed-up with the empty promises of the failing ANC government.
In August 2018 the residents of Ward 3 in the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality showed that rural people are embracing the DA’s agenda for change. This followed after the DA removed the ANC from power in this ward.
This increase in rural support in the Dr Beyers Naude and Walter Sisulu Municipalities, and the DA’s massive urban growth in the recent Ward 2 by-election in Nelson Mandela Bay, highlights that the DA continues to grow and is ready to govern.
The DA is also set to increase its number of representatives in the Eastern Cape Legislature after the national and provincial elections on 8 May 2019.
We are grateful to voters of Ward 2 for giving us this mandate and we don’t take it lightly.
Only the DA can build One South Africa for All and is big enough to beat the ANC in the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality and in the Eastern Cape.
