Today, 1 May 2019, the DA opened a new borehole in Boqo Village in the Emalahleni Local Municipality, where some have been without access to running water for three years. (Pictures attached here, here, here and here)
The new borehole will ensure an additional water source for the long suffering villagers in this drought stricken area.
The DA was approached by the headmen of seven local villages to assist them in their struggle for water in the area.
These people have been forgotten by the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM). The Municipality has only provided one borehole in the area – which is totally inadequate.
As a result, some of these residents have been forced to buy water for the past three years.
Local DA councillors, including Pieter Greyling, sourced R25 000 and drilled a borehole on the property of a local headman.
A water pump and tanks have also been installed and it is expected that this will deliver an additional 2,500 litres of water per hour.
The Chris Hani District Municipality is beset with corruption and is known for billions of rand going missing in the past. Recently the CHDM Chief Financial Officer, Nomfundo Fetsha, was also arrested on charges of fraud and theft.
There are approximately 70 villages in Emalahleni and it will cost the CHDM only R2,1 million to sink enough boreholes to mitigate against the effects of the drought.
But the failing ANC government is more interested in eating the money than they are in providing people with their basic human right to water.
A DA government will fight corruption, speed up basic service delivery and build One South Africa for All.
