The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the offer made by the City of Cape Town to support Nelson Mandela Bay as it struggles to avoid Day Zero.
We urge Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Eugene Johnson, to accept the offer made by Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, as this will be in the best interest of our residents and can assist in avoiding a looming humanitarian crisis.
The City of Cape Town successfully avoided Day Zero in 2018 and is the ideal partner to share best practice with in this time of need.
The offer of technical advice, assistance, and disaster management support will be invaluable.
Last month DA Leader, John Steenhuisen, conducted an oversight inspection in Nelson Mandela Bay to assess the City’s readiness for Day Zero. During this visit he committed that the DA will do all it can to assist residents during this unprecedented drought, drawing from the best practice that our governments have already shown in drought disaster management.
Now is the time to work together to ensure that no resident in Nelson Mandela Bay runs out of water.
