The desperation by the ANC in the Eastern Cape to score cheap political points by hijacking the handover of a new community hall constructed by the provincial government is appalling.

The ANC has confirmed that its provincial secretary, Lulama Ngcukayitobi, will tomorrow be presiding over the official handover of the Gqadushe Community Hall in the Raymond Mhlaba municipality. This event forms part of the ANC’s Letsema campaign.

The ANC has become so used to abusing state resources for its own political gain, it can no longer make the distinction between party and state. Perhaps it is because they have deployed so many cadres into government departments, they are now no longer distinguishable from the party.

For a party to officially hand over a community centre, constructed by a government department, using state resources to the tune of R500 000, and intended for the entire community to benefit from is reprehensible.

This event highlights just how low the ANC will stoop, and just how hollow the Letsema campaign is. The ANC cannot do anything on its own for the people.

If the ANC is adamant that it deserves credit for the Gqadushe Community Hall, I challenge them to provide the financial statements to prove that it was the party that paid for the hall’s construction.

If the ANC cannot provide such proof, then the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and the mayor of the Raymond Mhlaba municipality must be called to account for allowing a government building to be hijacked by a political party for political gain.

The DA will not allow the ANC to claim victories they don’t deserve while the people of the Eastern Cape suffer on a daily basis.
