The DA in the Eastern Cape has achieved a massive success, growing from 8,86% in 2021 to 38,29% in yesterday’s ward 33 (Tarkastad) by-election in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality. This is a surge in support of 505% (197 to 996 votes).

The result highlights the DA’s growth in rural Eastern Cape and proves that the DA remains the only party that can threaten the ANC’s monopoly on power.

The ANC won the ward but Action SA, the EFF and UDM all got 3% and less of the vote. This shows that the Eastern Cape is a two horse race between the DA and ANC.

Our candidate, Garth Titus, and our dedicated councillors and activists have been hard at work in ward 33, ensuring the people have a voice and that service delivery stays on track in the build-up to the by-election.

The DA wants to assure the people of ward 33 that we will continue to fight to bring back service delivery and good governance to Tarkastad.

We wish to thank Garth, our councillors and activists for their hard work and dedication in bringing the DA difference to Tarkastad, and we wish to thank the voters who have given us their support.

The DA will continue to fight for basic services and good governance to be brought back to our broken municipalities across the Eastern Cape. We will fight for our people to live in dignity, no matter where they choose to live, because that is what they are entitled to.
