The R75 between Gqeberha and Kariega is fast becoming Nelson Mandela Bay’s most dangerous road and is proving hazardous to the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
There are currently no operational traffic lights, no safe pedestrian crossings and hundreds of meters of damaged guardrails are strewn along the route. (see pictures here and here)
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is responsible for the maintenance of the R75, but over the last two years has shown very little interest in performing its duty.
I have written to the CEO of SANRAL, Reginald Demana, to request his urgent intervention before more people are injured or lose their lives. Receipt of my communication was received from SANRAL.
This stretch of road is also of vital importance to the economy of Nelson Mandela Bay as it is a main route for the transport of goods. Furthermore, traffic jams during peak hours are also impacting the jobs of our residents, and are also the cause of numerous accidents.
The people of Nelson Mandela Bay are in desperate need of SANRAL at least keeping its end of the bargain by doing maintenance on the R75.
The DA will do everything in its power to rescue Nelson Mandela Bay and safeguard its residents against this hazardous road of death and destruction. Together we can get Nelson Mandela Bay working again.
