The Democratic Alliance (DA) has lodged a complaint with the ethics committee of the Great Kei Municipality Council after an alleged acid attack on a municipal employee by a local councillor.

The alleged incident took place last Saturday at an event at the house of the ANC Ward 7 councillor, Cllr Zola Tshali.

The DA calls on the mayor and administration of the municipality to treat this matter as urgent and to show zero-tolerance if the aforementioned councillor is found to have breached the code of ethics.

The alleged actions of the councillor raise concerns about the safety and security of community members in the ward under his leadership. This community deserves a ward councillor who they can trust without any fear.

The Municipal Systems Act is clear on the roles and responsibilities of councillors, which is that councillors must act in the best interest of the municipality with credibility, integrity and in good faith. The alleged actions of Cllr Tshali are a clear breach of conduct of a councillor.

The incident must be investigated and a report submitted to Council at the next Council meeting.

The DA will not allow any unethical behaviour to take root in the municipality and will keep fighting for the residents of Great Kei to get the clean governance and quality service delivery they deserve.
