As families across the Eastern Cape prepare to travel this Easter weekend, the Democratic Alliance (DA) calls on all road users to practice patience, caution, and responsibility. With thousands expected to journey across the province, this is a critical moment to prevent tragedy before it strikes.
Too often, holiday periods in the Eastern Cape are marked not by celebration, but by devastation. Every fatal crash is a life cut short and a family shattered. We have the power to break this cycle. We call on all motorists to obey the rules of the road, avoid reckless overtaking, rest frequently on long drives, and never get behind the wheel while under the influence.
This responsibility lies with individuals, but it must also be met with urgency and action from the provincial government.
The DA once again calls for a coordinated and proactive safety plan that includes a permanent 24-hour presence of traffic law enforcement on high-risk routes, the rollout of Average Speed Over Distance camera systems along dangerous corridors such as the N2 and R61, and the consistent implementation of targeted roadblocks and sobriety checks throughout the province.
Traffic officers cannot be expected to shoulder this burden alone. Their dedication is commendable, but they must be given the tools and support to act decisively and efficiently. Preventative policing must replace reactive reporting.
This weekend, let us not measure success by the absence of headlines. Let us measure it by the number of families who arrive safely at their destinations and return home without incident.
The DA remains committed to championing road safety in the Eastern Cape. Our people deserve better than a government that reacts only when lives are lost. They deserve a province where safety is prioritised, and every journey is made with peace of mind.
