The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature this week unanimously adopted a Democratic Alliance Motion Without Notice calling for urgent intervention by the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development to secure funding for Guardians of Hope in Buffalo City Metro and to protect the vulnerable infants and toddlers currently in its care.
Guardians of Hope currently cares for 27 abandoned, critically ill, and vulnerable babies and toddlers, but severe funding shortfalls could force the centre to reduce its capacity by the end of March.
Many of these children have already experienced trauma or serious medical challenges, and the prospect of losing their stable environment risks compounding that trauma and undermining the continuity of care they urgently need.
The Democratic Alliance raised this matter in the Legislature to ensure that urgent action is taken before the situation deteriorates further. The motion calls on the MEC for Social Development, Bukiwe Fanta, to intervene immediately to secure interim funding support and to work with Provincial Treasury to identify sustainable operational funding for the centre.
The Legislature further resolved that no child should be removed from Guardians of Hope as a result of administrative or funding failures. Ensuring that the best interests of the child remain paramount must guide every decision taken by government.

Community-run facilities such as Guardians of Hope play an essential role in supporting the state to care for vulnerable children. Allowing accredited places of safety to collapse would not only deepen the humanitarian crisis facing these children, but it would also place additional strain on an already overstretched child protection system.
I, together with DA Buffalo Metro Constituency Leader Leander Kruger MPL, will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the resolution of the House is implemented and that the necessary support is provided to secure the future of Guardians of Hope.
The wellbeing and stability of vulnerable children must never become casualties of bureaucratic delay or budget constraints. The people of the Eastern Cape deserve leadership that protects the most vulnerable and ensures that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and caring environment.
