Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape convened our first Provincial Council meeting since its successful Provincial Congress in February of this year.

We convened this meeting in Buffalo City in the run-up to two crucial Buffalo City Municipality by-elections on Wednesday, 17 June.

Our Members of Parliament, Members of the Provincial Legislature and Councillors from across the province attended Provincial Council to assess the DA’s progress towards our campaign objectives for the Local Government Elections on 4 November.

Today’s engagements were constructive, and it is clear that the DA in the Eastern Cape is focused and united behind our mission to get our towns and cities working for all across the province.

The Provincial Council reflected on the recent floods in the province and commended Executive Mayor Hattingh Bormann’s leadership during two major flood events. The provincial government’s response to the floods has been non existent, with many communities still suffering the devastating impact of these floods. This has been raised directly with the Premier and in the Provincial Legislature, but the response remains woeful.

The Provincial Council had a robust but constructive discussion about the Government of National Unity and resolved to engage the Federal Leadership on the future of the GNU and how the DA’s impact can be strengthened.

Recent positive polling results indicate that momentum is building behind the DA across the province and these meetings provide an important platform for the party to assess progress and refocus our efforts to get the best results possible.

As we approach the elections, Provincial Council committed to growth and that our public representatives, activists, and volunteers will be on the ground, working with our residents and carrying the message that the DA can get our towns and cities working for all.
