The Democratic Alliance expresses its deepest condolences following the tragic passing of Dugulth “Junior King” Ferreira, who died in a car accident in the Free State early this morning. South Africa has lost an extraordinary creative force, and the arts community is in collective shock at the news of his untimely death.

Junior King was a trailblazer in Amapiano choreography, dance, and a beacon of possibility for thousands of young South Africans.

Rising from Kariega to international acclaim, he proved that world-class talent exists in every corner of our country and that passion and discipline can redefine a person’s circumstances.

His work introduced global audiences to South African dance in a way few performers have achieved, and he carried our creative identity with pride and authenticity on every stage he touched.

He was also a mentor, a role model, and a source of hope to young people navigating communities marked by hardship, unemployment, and limited opportunities. Through his artistry, he showed that creative careers are not only viable, but transformative.

The DA mourns with his family, especially his young children, who were injured in the crash. We extend our prayers for their recovery and our heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones, his colleagues, and the many fans who have been inspired by his journey.

As a nation, we must honour his legacy by continuing to support the creative economy, nurturing emerging talent, and ensuring that artists have the platforms and recognition they deserve.
