The DA would like to congratulate the students of Nelson Mandela University (NMU) for standing together to rescue their institution and usher in an era of stability and good governance by voting for the DA Student Organisation (DASO) and their president-elect, Lathitha Mbuzwana, securing a landslide victory in the NMU Student Representative Council (SRC) election.

The SRC election took place on Monday and Tuesday of this week, with DASO securing 79% of the SRC seats. They won four out of five NMU campuses, obtained five of the nine Central SRC seats, representation on all seven faculties, and claimed 34 of the 43 seats overall.

This marks a significant improvement from the 2023 SRC election, in which DASO received only 22% of the vote while the EFF held the majority of seats. It is clear that support for the DA continues to grow among young people.

We extend our gratitude to all NMU students for their support in this election, to Campaign Manager and Constituency Leader Baxolile Nodada MP, to DASO Federal Chairperson Lenard Malesa, and to all our activists who worked tirelessly throughout the campaign to secure this victory.

The DA has faith in this new generation of young leaders, and we are excited to see the positive changes they will bring during their term. We trust they will remain true to their manifesto promise of providing good governance and trusted leadership.

DASO believes that an effective SRC must be accessible, responsive, transparent, and accountable to the needs of the student body, ensuring that no student is left behind.
