The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the Joe Gqabi District Municipality to request immediate intervention in Burgersdorp’s severe water wastage crisis caused by an aging and deteriorating underground water pipe that stretches over a vast area of approximately 600 meters.
The water pipe in La Rochelle Street has been leaking since September 2024. In October of last year, excavation work was carried out to gain access to pipe to assess the problem. Since then, no safety measures, such as security tape or barriers, have been put in place, and loose soil has been left on the remains of the tarred road. This negligence poses a significant hazard to motorists and children who frequently play in the area.
Despite repeated calls for action from DA Ward Councillor, Matthee Nel, the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, which is responsible for water and sanitation services in the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, has yet to take concrete steps to address this escalating issue.
This water leak is particularly concerning, as Burgersdorp is a water-scarce area. The continuous loss of clean water is unacceptable. The town has already been facing water shedding for years, which only provides water every second day from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Consequently, I have written to the Municipal Manager of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, urging the municipality to communicate openly with residents and provide a timeline for the resolution of this issue.
We demand answers to the following questions:
- When will the municipality replace the pipe?
- What is the expected timeframe for completing the repairs?
- What immediate measures will be taken to secure the site and prevent further safety risks?
The Joe Gqabi District Municipality must act swiftly, provide a clear plan, and restore the water infrastructure before the situation worsens.
Residents deserve transparency and accountability from their local government. This matter can no longer be ignored while precious water is wasted and lives are put at risk due to unsafe conditions.
